Major Title Will Not Change Darren Clarke

Darren Clarke is a professional golfer from Northern Ireland who currently plays on the European Tour and has previously played on the PGA Tour. 

Clarke's victory at the 2011 Open Championship meant he became the third major winner from Northern Ireland in 13 months, following Graeme McDowell and Rory McIlroy's 2010 and 2011 victories in the U.S. Open, prompting McIlroy to quip that Northern Ireland was the 'Golf Capital of the World'.

This is nothing like Royal St. George's, of course. Instead of temperatures in the low 60s and spurts of heavy rain, Clarke practiced Tuesday under a bright sun, the mercury climbing into the 90s, the humidity making it feel even hotter.

"Obviously, totally different conditions," he said. "The heat is going to be a massive, massive factor this week."

He'll need some different shots, too. 

"You never know what the game is going to give you. You never know what's around the corner," Clarke said. "Just never give up. Keep going, keep going, and keep going. That's what it taught me."

"There's a little added tension there, a little bit more anxiety to try to and perform well," Donald said. "You've got to somehow focus on what you can control and almost see it as just another event. But it's tough. It's a bigger stage. It's harder to just kind of play it like a normal event."

That's because it's not a normal event. They call them "majors" for a reason. And until Donald or Westwood win one, perhaps this week at the PGA Championship, they will be more like Harry Cooper than Tiger Woods.

There are a number of good young players who could step up and take over the reins, but McIlroy is just the most interesting.

He’s a likeable character who doesn’t mind interacting with the crowd and the media. He’s not afraid to travel long distances and play tournaments in every corner of the world, which is essential to growing the game on a global scale.

Steve Williams went too far

Rory McIlroy has waded into the Steve Williams-Tiger Woods controversy, suggesting the caddie "maybe went a little far" in his comments following Adam Scott's victory at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational.

Scott produced a flawless final round to secure a four-stroke success, giving his new partnership with caddie Williams the ideal start. Williams was sacked by Woods in July, ending an association that yielded 13 major wins.
